Story
Frank Delaney learned to read people on a river boat that carried more rumor than cargo. At twenty-six he lost everything: the boat share, the suit, the name he had been using. At dawn he walked into a back room with nothing and, by the next dawn, walked out with all of it. Those who were there still argue about how. Frank says it was simple: he listened longer than anyone and spoke less. He has one rule he repeats to every newcomer: never promise what you cannot say aloud. Years later Ambrogio Sarti sat across from him and lost the only round the Old Man ever lost on purpose, because Frank needed a foothold and would never have taken a gift. Frank understood, said nothing and let a coin roll between his fingers. His Letter reached him mid-conversation. He finished his sentence first. Slick's trick is not luck. It is knowing exactly how much of a room is chance, and being brave about the rest.
