Kenan Demirkol came home from the Long War with a medal he never wore and a limp he never mentioned. His regiment had broken apart; he spent four years finding every surviving member and bringing them back, one by one, to wherever they needed to be. He did not ask for gratitude. The Old Man met him on the third return trip and offered him work. Kenan said he would accept it on one condition: if anyone in the Mansion ever went without a meal, he'd eat last. For years he did, at the far end of the Old Man's table, and one evening the Letter was waiting under his plate. He let everyone else finish first; then he read it, and rose from the end of the table to stand among the ten the Old Man had called his children. He carries a silver-headed cane carved like a wolf and wears a high collar of gray fur. When he fights, the room goes quiet, because everyone understands the hunt has begun. He is formidable, fair and unhurried. Each opponent he drops makes him steadier, and every ally behind him makes him gentler.
“The pack eats last.”
