Story
Frank Delaney learned cards on a river boat that carried more rumor than cargo. At twenty-six he lost everything: the boat share, the suit, the name he had been using. At dawn he walked into a back room with nothing and, by the next dawn, walked out with all of it. Those who were there still argue about how. Frank says it was simple: he stopped playing the cards and started playing the people holding them. He has one rule he repeats to every newcomer: never bet what you cannot say aloud. Years later Ambrogio Sarti sat across from him and lost the only hand the Old Man ever lost on purpose, because Frank needed a stake and would never have taken a gift. Frank understood, folded his cards and said nothing. His Letter reached him mid-game. He finished the hand first. The Gambler's trick is not luck. It is knowing exactly how much of the table is chance, and being brave about the rest.
