Lorenzo Rinaldi was born above his father's bakery on Anchor Lane, where the ovens were lit at three in the morning and the neighborhood's children were fed before school, paid for or not. By twelve he knew every family on the block by its bread order. By thirty he knew which of them were in trouble before they did. In a lean winter a flour strike nearly closed the shop, until a stranger named Ambrogio Sarti paid the debt and asked for nothing. Lorenzo never forgot a favor he could not repay. The block began calling him Papa the year nobody on his street went hungry, and the name outgrew the street. He is patient, heavy only with his word, and trusted with other families' children, ledgers and secrets. When the Old Man's Letter found him he was kneading dough. He finished the loaf, washed his hands and packed one bag. Papa does not build fast out of hurry. He builds fast because he has already seen the whole house in his mind, and is only waiting for the family to catch up.
