Story
Weather Before Letters
Rafael grew up in a fishing village. Boys there learned weather before they learned letters. At seventeen he sailed into a gale that kept the coast guard in port. The islanders tied a ribbon to the broken mast and left it there for years. He carried medicine to an island clinic. He came back with the mast bent and a grin.
Toward the Weather
The village called him Storm. Others run from weather. He goes toward it. He turned that into a trade, running goods along the coast. Faster than any patrol boat, and never carrying what he would be ashamed to name aloud. He laughs easily, so people forget how carefully he plans.
A Boat for a Pledge
At fourteen he was sent to the Sarti house as a pledge of peace. Two years on land felt like punishment. Then the Old Man gave him a boat. Years later the Old Man needed a captain for a dangerous night. He found Rafael already at the pier, boat fueled, logbook open.
The Bow Turned
His Letter reached him mid-voyage, by a pilot boat splashed with spray. He read it over the wheel. He turned the bow. He refuels before he is asked and charts the coast before anyone else wakes. His speed comes from preparation, not luck. "If the wind is against you, you have not gone fast enough."
