Story
Markets, Not Miles
Tariq comes from coast-to-interior traders who measured distance in markets. He learned arithmetic from his grandfather. He learned patience from his grandfather's falcon. A bird that watches for hours and strikes once. At twenty-two he took over the family routes.
The Clean Ledger
In four years there was not one disputed account. Rivals searched for a mistake. They found a ledger so clean it embarrassed them. He drew a small star in the margin of any number he could not yet explain. Tariq offered them tea. He never explained, because the numbers already had.
Six Winters
When the Harbor War ended, rival houses sent their children to the Old Man's table. Tariq was sixteen. He spent six winters in Ambrogio Sarti's house. Never once was he treated as a hostage. The Old Man taught him chess and let him win only when he had earned it. It was a debt of affection, not of money.
Then We Are Going
The Letter found him at a harbor café, falcon on his arm. He read it and offered the bird a piece of dried fruit. "Then we are going," he said. He hits where the enemy hides, behind its front line. The falcon never hunts the loud one. It hunts the one hiding behind him.
Signature line
“The falcon never hunts the loud one. It hunts the one hiding behind him.”
