Ilona has held the same corner seat at the Grand Hotel bar for eleven years. In that time every family in Port Vesper has told her something it meant to keep. She writes nothing down. She repeats nothing for free. She has never once been wrong about who would call her next.
Nobody remembers who first called her the Sphinx. She answers to it. A riddle is safer than a name. She smiles at those who try to guess and nods at those who do not. She answers a question with a question. The wise ask what it costs.
A woman at the telegraph and a woman at the bar. Each knows half of the same day. When they compare notes, the city sits still. The Count dines in the same hall each week and knows exactly who he is not. A sale she once made twice came back to her without complaint. She smiled and said nothing.
Mysterious, patient, amused. She stands with the heir because the heir asked her the right question. It cost nothing. The tasseled key opens a door in this hotel she has never had to use. The answer will cost something else. "You came to ask something. Ask me what it costs."
“You came to ask something. Ask me what it costs.”
