Story
Rumor Cargo
Frank learned to read people on a river boat. It carried more rumor than cargo. He sat in the corner and counted who laughed a beat too late. On the lower deck he learned that a laugh can lie, but a pause never does. Nobody noticed the quiet boy. He noticed everybody.
Everything Back
At twenty-six he lost the boat share, the suit and the name he was using. At dawn he walked into a back room with nothing. By the next dawn he walked out with all of it. Those who were there still argue about how. Frank says it was simple: he listened longer and spoke less.
The Lost Round
Years later Ambrogio Sarti sat across from him. The Old Man lost the only round he ever lost on purpose. Frank needed a foothold and would never have taken a gift. He understood and said nothing. Then he made sure no newcomer to the harbor was ever promised what could not be said aloud.
Mid-Sentence
His Letter reached him in the middle of a conversation. He finished his sentence first. Slick's trick is not luck. It is knowing how much of a room is chance, and being brave about the rest. He picked the Old Man's side, and now he picks yours. "Heads, they fall. Tails, we rise."
