Raelene grew up on the long gravel roads of the Australian outback. There a late truck is a lost truck. She learned to drive before she learned to cook. She learned to read a horizon the way others read a clock. She came to Port Vesper with three trucks and a ledger.
Now thirty of her rigs cross the Works every night. She follows one rule. She never asks whose cargo it is. She says a truck is only as honest as its driver, and the driver is only as honest as the clock. It never arrives late. Nobody has ever seen her open a trailer.
Once a rival promised her a shorter road for a favor. She drove the long road with every truck on time. The shorter road closed the next week. The load arrived with the sun still on the rails. She never mentioned it. She ties the load, checks the clock and goes.
Tough, dependable and laconic. She stands with the heir because the heir never asked her to break her one rule. Her trucks wait at the harbor gate whenever you call. She keeps a spare key on a chain, in case the heir needs a truck at midnight. The road is long. The clock is short. "Don't tell me what's in it. Tell me when it's due."
