He knows the difference between a mistake and a plan by the third paragraph. He knows who insured a warehouse the week before it burned. He knows who holds two lives on one policy.
His company retired him with a carriage clock. He sold the clock. He kept the files. Strangers assumed he was a retired clerk, and he let them. A man who reads the last page first is not easily impressed. He began to read the harbor.
A warehouse owner had insured his building the week before a fire. Suresh found the page. He slid it under the owner's door, with a polite note. He underlined one sentence in blue and left no name on the envelope. The fire never came. Nobody was accused, and nobody was hurt.
He is courteous, meticulous and quietly dangerous. He stands with the heir because the heir read the whole contract. It is rare. He keeps the carriage-clock receipt in his wallet, a reminder of what he gave up. He ate lunch with a man once, and the man signed. "Strictly speaking, you signed it. Page nine."
