Sun-hee learned watchmaking from her grandfather in Busan. He taught her that every spring has a will. A hurried hand breaks it. He taught her to sit with a stuck wheel until it told her why. A patient hand listens to it. She listened for years before she touched anything.
She came to Port Vesper when she heard the city's old safes had no one left who understood them. A safe, she says, is only a very stubborn watch. She set up in the back room of a Velvet Mile shop. Half the back-room locks on the Mile are hers. Half those doors open when she decides.
The Customs House held an old fund for dock orphans. Its safe had stuck for ten years. Locksmiths came and left. Sun-hee sat before it for three days. The tea went cold, the light turned gold, and the old hinges forgave her. On the third evening the door sighed open. She went home before anyone could thank her.
She stands with the heir because the heir did not hurry her. She has a pocket watch to repair every month, and a friend who brings it to talk. She is patient, stubborn and exact. There is no door she has stopped believing in. "Everything opens. It only needs the right patience."
“Everything opens. It only needs the right patience.”
