Obinna drove a night taxi for nineteen years. He learned Port Vesper the way a doctor learns a body. By the places that hurt. He learned which street hums and which one holds its breath. He never asks where you are going. Only when you need to arrive.
No courier has delivered more quiet passengers. The meter in his cab stopped years ago. He keeps it that way. His passengers do not tell him their names, and he does not ask for them. Nobody can say how long a ride took. Nobody can say where it ended.
One night the trams stopped across the city. Obinna drove forty strangers home, one trip after another. He never turned the meter on. The next day the harbor found fresh bread on the stands near every tram stop. At dawn he drank his tea standing next to the car. That is the night the harbor began to say his name.
He stands with the heir because the heir asked him where he wanted to go. He did not know the answer. He still picked a road. He wipes the dashboard before every ride and leaves the radio off. He is calm, dry-witted and unhurried. "Tell me when, boss. I will find the how."
“Tell me when, boss. I will find the how.”
