Story
The Pilot
Hideo was a harbor pilot. He climbed aboard ships at the mouth of the bay. For twelve years he guided them through fog to a berth. Lanterns on the masts mattered less than the pilot who knew where the shoals slept. He read fog the way others read faces. It hides little from anyone who is paying attention.
The Quiet Leaving
The pilots called him the Mist. He left a ship so quietly that captains did not notice until the anchor was down. He is courteous and speaks softly. Captains said they never heard his footsteps, only the ship settling right. In every room he enters he lights one small lantern. So no one is startled to find him there.
The Last Winter
Peace had come, and at nineteen Hideo was sent to the Sarti house as the pilots' pledge. The Old Man hired him once, on a night that decided the war's last winter. He brought the old man's ship home through fog with no lamps. The Old Man called him "my son" before the whole guild. Neither spoke of it again.
Into the Fog
The Letter reached him at the pilot station. He lit his lantern and read it. Then he walked out into the fog. He leaves a lantern burning in every room for the one who comes in last. He does not follow you. He goes ahead and lights the way. "Fog hides nothing. People just stop looking."
