Dmitri Orlov was born in a quarry town where stone was the only inheritance. He worked the cutting floor until the war took him to a vault line, where for three winters he guarded a door that was never opened. When he came home he understood something about stillness: nothing is as strong as the thing that does not move. Port Vesper's bank hired him to guard its vault, and for nine years not one account was touched. The Old Man visited the vault once, saw Dmitri standing at the door, and said, "I'll take two of him." Dmitri accepted the offer on a single condition: that he could keep the habit of arriving an hour early. He speaks little, reads slowly and is deeply fond of children and chess. He believes a wall does not need to be loud; it only needs to be there.
“A wall does not argue.”
