Viktor commanded a grain freighter in the northern ports. There the harbors freeze from the shore outward. Every captain waits for the thaw. He kept a small logbook of every thaw he had seen, and not one came early. He studied the water the way other men study faces. Cold, he believed, is honest: it tells you exactly what it will do.
One winter he did not wait. He took a half-empty ship and a crew that trusted him more than the weather. He opened a channel through the ice. The ice groaned all night, and by morning the lane was ready. Forty ships followed. The northern ports called him Icebreaker, the man who cuts a path and leaves it open.
The Old Man's first deep-water shipment came through Viktor's channel. Viktor asked only for fair freight. And for his crew's names on the contract, every one. In Port Vesper he keeps a berth open each winter for any hull that needs one. No one pays twice for the same cold.
