Driss set more bones in the dark than the army had beds for. That was the Long War. He worked by touch and by count. A brass-cornered box was all he carried out, and he wore the lid like a medal. Afterward he could not sleep in a silent room. He went looking for a door that was always open.
He screwed a brass plate to a door under the old customs stairs of the Quay. The sign says only: open when it hurts. Dockers, couriers and old soldiers climb down his steps all night. He never charges the same price twice. He asks for a story, and gets a different one every time.
He set the shoulder of a granite-quiet guard. He set the shoulder of a sergeant. Neither knew the other had come. He kept their coats on a hook until they had slept enough to stand. Both left owing him. Driss lets them keep the debt as a reason to return.
He stands with the heir because the heir came down the steps alone. He did not ask why. He is warm, weary and quietly funny. A pot of strong tea waits on the shelf, and the door is never locked. The brass plate is yours now too. "This will hurt less than the story you tell about it."
