Yannis grew up in a fishing family from the old port. They sold their boat to pay a debt. He spent his teens knocking tin cans off the customs sheds at fifty paces. He kept the can with the biggest dent as a lucky charm. He never missed. He only ever fired a second too early.
The old hands of the Quay call him Hairtrigger. He has spent two years trying to fix that one second. Gravedigger offered him a deal. The old hands laughed, and he laughed with them until he did not. Stand perfectly still for a full minute, and he will teach patience. Yannis made it to forty seconds.
One night a customs lamp swept the sheds. Yannis lay behind a crate and did not move. He counted his breaths. He did not get a medal. He got a cup of tea and a nod from the watchman. Fifty-eight seconds. The lamp went past, and so did the trouble.
He has not yet reached sixty seconds. He has reached the habit of trying. You gave him a place to try again. The clock on the wall still hangs at fifty-eight. He is saving the last two seconds for later. He will not fire early for you. "Give me one more try. Just one."
