Wade was a combat engineer sergeant in the Long War. He walked in front so the others could walk behind. He served in a mixed company under the Wolf. His boots were always the first in the mud and the last to leave. He learned a second language there. And the habit of counting everyone twice at dawn.
He came home with the count still in his head. Every dawn, still, he counted heads. The Hill hired him for its guard rounds. He writes the night's headcount on a small card and leaves it on the gatepost. He checks every door twice. Once for the lock, once for whoever built it.
A storm took the lights off the Quay stairs. Wade took over the night watch there for a friend who had set his bones. He stood at the cellar door till morning. At first light the stairs were empty and the lantern had burned to its last inch. Nobody climbed down who should not have. He says the debt is not paid yet.
He still calls the Wolf commander. The Wolf still calls him sergeant. He stands with the heir on the same terms. He keeps a small notebook of every door on the Hill, and he has your name in it now. Disciplined, dry and protective. "Door is clear. Your nerves are another matter."
