Story
Three in the Morning
Lorenzo was born above his father's bakery on Anchor Lane. The ovens were lit at three, and the neighbourhood children ate before school. Paid for or not, nobody kept count. By twelve he knew every family by its bread order. By thirty he knew who was in trouble before they did.
The Flour Strike
One lean winter a flour strike closed the mills. The shop was a week from shutting its doors. A stranger named Ambrogio Sarti paid the whole debt and asked for nothing. Lorenzo lay awake over a favor he could not repay. By morning he had baked double and left a loaf at every door.
The Year Nobody Went Hungry
That year nobody on Anchor Lane went hungry, and the block began calling him Papa. Other families left their children, ledgers and secrets with him. He lost none of them. When two houses stopped speaking, he sat them at his counter with one loaf between them. They broke it before the oven cooled.
Hands Washed
The Old Man's Letter found him kneading dough. He finished the loaf, washed his hands and packed one bag. Papa does not build fast out of hurry. He builds fast because he has already seen the whole house in his mind. Now he waits for you to catch up. "Bread first. Business after."
