Levan wrestled for his country. A knee ended the sport. A scrapyard on the Works offered him a night watchman's stool. The scrapyard cat sleeps on his lap, and the watchman says nothing about it. He took it. A big man learns to sit very quietly.
He has never struck a thief. He simply takes hold. The thief spends the rest of the night reconsidering. He asks the thief about his mother and his work, and sometimes finds him a job. In the morning Levan makes him tea. The owner says the fence is for decoration.
One night a rival crew came to the yard in two vans. Levan did not stand. He sat, poured tea, and said the gate opens when he stands up. By dawn the vans were gone and the kettle was empty. The yard has been quiet ever since.
He stands with the heir because the heir never asked him to stand early. He holds a gate better than any wall. Slow, gentle, immovable. In his sleep his hands are still folded, as if ready to hold a door. The yard is quiet. "The gate opens when I stand up. I am sitting."
“The gate opens when I stand up. I am sitting.”
