Mei Lin Zhao ran the night shift at a tea warehouse before she ran anything else. Forty workers, three doors, one clock on the wall. By the end of her first month, nobody was ever late and nobody was ever overworked, because she knew precisely which minute belonged to whom. The Old Man noticed that her warehouse moved cargo faster than any other and offered her a captaincy. She carries a red-sheathed blade at her belt that has never left its scabbard in public. "The order is the blade," she says. "This is only a reminder." She speaks quietly, never repeats instructions and keeps a short list of rules in her coat pocket, with a space at the bottom for the rule she hasn't learned yet. Her crews are the most orderly in the harbor and the least afraid.
“Everyone has a minute. Yours is now.”
